Sometimes in our lives we find ourselves slipping into unhappiness. In order to get out of this dreary state of mind, we must do things to lift our spirits and cheer us up again. Here are 8 ways to cheer yourself up and allow you to stay the happy person you want to be!

  1. Stop what you’re doing. It is highly possible that the reason for your bad mood is because you’re doing something that is bringing you down. For example, if you’ve been working on really difficult and strenuous internal assessment for a few hours and you’re finding yourself slipping from the sane to the insane, stop working and give yourself a break. Focusing on something else for a short while is healthy and will lift your spirit so that when you go to work on it again, you feel more confident and positive!
  2. Listen to music. Music is an extraordinary tool that can take you far away from that rotten mind state you seem to be stuck in. Upbeat, happy tunes can lift your mood in an instant! My personal recommendations include Mr Blue Sky by ELO and Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves. These two beauties give you the perfect opportunity to dance around the house and fully immerse yourself in erratic aggressive head-banging mode. Trust me, I know from personal experience that music is a winner.
  3. Get active! Moving your body and can be just the break you needed to get yourself out of that caveman slouch you’ve been in for the past few hours. Physical activity and exercise (yes, I know they seem tedious) give you a big boost of energy and release feel-good hormones such as endorphins and dopamine. And hey, a little bit of exercise can be used as the ideal excuse to eat that last piece of chocolate you’ve been craving.
  4. Talk to someone. Talking it out with a friend or loved one can really help because, more often than not, you will find out why you’re feeling that unhappy way. Identifying the problem is one of the best things you can do to lift your mood as you’ll discover what has the potential to bring you down and what you can do to avoid it. Asking for help and advice is always one of the best options you can go for.
  5. Hang out with friends. Leaving the house and going out to have some fun with friends will dissolve your unsavoury state of mind and make you feel positive again! Friends make us laugh and see the good in others and ourselves which is just what we need someone to do for us when we can’t be bothered doing it ourselves.
  6. Create something. Drawings, baking, writing music or even starting a personal diary are just a few examples of creative activities that can boost us up and make us feel like actual functioning humans again! Creativity can often be forgotten in the midst of our busy lives, so taking the time to create something entirely unique and personal to you is a wonderful step in releasing yourself from your sour mood.
  7. Think positive thoughts. Affirmations and constructive quotes may seem cheesy, but they’re there for a reason. One of my favourites is “Being happy never goes out of style” by fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer. It tells us that we should always try to remain happy, and even when we’re not, we should take the steps needed to get back to that state so we can ultimately look and feel our best!
  8. Do what makes you happy! We all have fun hobbies and activities that we partake in which can make us feel happy whether we realise it or not. Knowing what these are and getting up and doing them is the best thing you can do to make you feel good! A clever trick you can do, is to write these down once you’ve identified them so you always know how to cheer yourself up again.

There are limitless amounts of things you can do to lift you up and make you feel whole again. Just because you’re feeling down at the moment doesn’t mean you’ll feel down forever.

Finding something that makes you happy (such as the ideas on this list or your own hobbies) and experiencing them first hand is the perfect way to cheer yourself up. So go on – be the happy person you want to be!
