“The biggest challenges facing teacher education are the same as those faced by teachers: how do we prepare for an environment the likes of which we have never seen before? Today teachers are confronted with more learners with complex learning needs and backgrounds – children with learning difficulties requiring extra support or living in homes where drugs, alcohol or violence is a problem.
“Teachers must also meet the needs of an increasing culturally diverse student body. It’s forecast by 2032 that nearly half of all students will be Māori or Pacifica and may not achieve their potential if their cultural norms are not part their learning experiences.
“The expectations on teachers to make a difference for our children and young people continue to grow in a system already struggling for resources. The Teaching Council has recently published new requirements for teacher training which will help address some of these challenges.”
