A workplace guide for impressing your boss on the first day has been taken offline after swift backlash.

The Five Ways to Impress on Your First Day – posted by UK recruitment agency Reed – gave some unusual advice that could make you seem a bit too eager to please.

Apart from the usual ‘turn up early and stay late’ it made strange suggestions from seeking out the popular workers to buying everybody lunch.

The same top-tips guide also suggested as a new employee you should “laugh at everything.”

It went on: “Try finding the most popular person in the office, then follow them around for the rest of the day.”

Sounds like a sure-fire way to come across as a stalker or end up in a first-day meeting with HR.

Feedback to the article was brutal with readers describing it as “the worst advice ever given” with one suggesting is should be titled “How to Make Sure Everyone Thinks You’re a Serial Killer.”

Reed were pretty quick at taking it down.

Here’s some better advice:

Plan ahead: Get sorted so you know where you are going, what time you need to be there, what to wear, what you need to bring and the schedule for each day.

Make an effort to meet the team: Take the time to get to know the people you will be working with, remember their names and ask about their roles. Don’t get too personal.

Learn as much as you can in your first week: Use the first week to ask as many questions as you can and find out how your role adds to the success of the company.

Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions and to admit you don’t know something.

Find out what is expected: Building a relationship with your new manager is important and so is understanding their what they expect of you. Again, ask questions so you understand goals and performance goals.

Be patient: You want to show your employer they made the right decision in hiring you but you don’t have to go all out in week one. Aim to listen more than talk in week one.

Pace yourself: If you are in the job for the long term you have time to show you are a great asset.
