With over 75 key Māori words and phrases, the Original Talking Tiki aims to make the Māori language more accessible to children and adults and provide them with a way to learn entry level Te Reo Māori for themselves.
For ages three and over, the soft Tiki teaches both the Māori and English translation of each word in six categories: greetings, family and people, body parts, days of the week and numbers and colours.
The Original Talking Tiki is an original concept designed by creative developer Brendon Blade under the banner of MAAKE Limited. Coming from a practical family with a builder for a father, Blade enjoys the creative process and aspires to produce beautiful, Kiwi products for a wide audience.
“The idea for developing The Original Talking Tiki was born when I was overseas in 2008, and since returning to New Zealand I’ve been working towards bringing it to market.
I saw people coming over to New Zealand and experiencing the Māori culture but not being able to take home anything educational for their friends and family – the Original Talking Tiki provides both a Kiwi reminder of their trip and also helps promote Te Reo Māori to the rest of the world.” he says.
Currently only shipping nationwide, Blade has already received an abundance of praise for the educational soft toy.
“Although the product didn’t get to market in time for Māori Language Week, the Original Talking Tiki has been a huge hit over Christmas. I’ve had really positive feedback from families who are seeing the value of a Te Reo resource like this for their kids.” he says.
The Original Talking Tiki product is available for purchase through the product website, www.talkingtiki.co.nz.
