The Young and Healthy 2019 Trust is excited to have launched the Zespri Young and Healthy Virtual Adventure led by a star cast of NZ’s sporting elite, ASICS Ambassadors; Ardie Savea, Kane Williamson, Ameliaranne Ekinasio and Samantha Charlton.

With support from partners Zespri International and ASICSNZ over 20,000 children from all over NZ will participate with their classmates at no cost to participants and prizes from Zespri and ASICS to be won.

Recent research has shown that unless there is a concerted effort to engage in more activity and restrict screen time, there will be significant challenges to the younger generation leading healthier lives.  So, the six-week Zespri Young and Healthy Virtual Adventure uses technology to engage the students and leading sporting role models to inspire and motivate children to move more often and engage in other healthy behaviours, to build the foundations for a lifetime of good mental and physical health and wellbeing.

To get started the children’ have lots of fun creating their own unique avatars.  Then to earn the points that move their class around the global course, they are encouraged to move more often during their day, and accumulate bonus points by drinking plenty of water rather than high sugar drinks, eating the recommended daily amount of fruit and veges*, minimising leisure screen time*, and getting a good night’s sleep*..

As they complete each leg, they’re shown an animated video of their avatar exploring some exciting destinations such as New York, Peru, Croatia and many more. Ardie, Kane, Ameliaranne and Samantha will be their guides providing encouragement and healthy tips whilst students also learn about the history and culture of the countries they ‘visit’.

Recognising the importance of families making healthy choices together parents can join their child ‘s class ‘support crew’ team with other parents and also experience the virtual adventure so as a family they can practise healthy behaviours together.

“Establishing healthy habits is easier when the whole family is on board, and it benefits everyone.so we’d love to see whanau involved to support their child,” says Young and Healthy Trust founder and Virtual Adventure Creator, Kim Harvey.
